Open Championship 1899
Vardon won by a mile. His two opening rounds of 76 pulverised the field and there was little drama thereafter.
The compensation was to watch Vardon hit the ball.
The stiffish breezes at Sandwich presented no trouble at all to Harry Vardon. Playing with a short and rather light clubs, he hit every ball with a magnificent freedom and power that the the long carries (even with wind in his face) seem like child's play. He won the championship with ease by the power of his long game and steadiness.
Vardon won the Championship 5 shots of Jack White and a full ten shots ahead of J.H. Taylor.
