Royal St. George`s

Open Championship 1904

Won by Jack White, after a thrilling last round of 69.

White (from Sunningdale) started with a disappointing first round of 80 which included squandering seven shots at the fourth. He recovered slightly on the next day with a 75, but at the end of the day was still six shots adrift of the second round leader leader Harry Vardon.

Having started with only 32 shots for the front nine on the last day, White started the back nine with three 4's and continued to play the last nine perfectly to score his 69.

He was almost caught by both Braid and Taylor, both of whom had putts at the last hole to tie.

Taylor's last round of 68 stood as an Open Championship record for the next quarter of a century.
