Open Championship 1911
Vardon's fifth Open Championship.
This was fiercely contested to the last hole by seven players including Braid, Massy, Duncan, Taylor Hilton and Herd. Vardon had played indifferently during the championship but on the last day ended up with th massive advantage of being in the Clubhouse first with a 'possible winning score' posted.
All but Massey failed to post the same score and Massey had to play the last three holes in 12 shots to tie with Vardon, which after playing into some strong winds, he ultimately achieved on the 18th green following a fine second shot from a bad lie and a stone dead putt from 12 yards.
The playoff the next day was an anticlimax, with Vardon overwhelming Massey with power golf. Vardon's form had returned as if by magic - he later attributed his indifferent golf of the previous afternoon ot abandoning his dietary routine and taking too lavish a lunch at Royal St. Georges.
