Open Championship 1985
Another year in which the weather ensured that scoring would not be easy. After three days of wind and rain, Tom Kite, seeking his first major championship, was two shots clear entering the last nine holes, but perished in the bunkers beside the 10th green.
Any of six golfers were in contention at this stage, and Payne Stewart set the first significant target with a last round of 68. David Graham and Bernhard Langer, joint leaders after three rounds, slipped with last round 75s.
Sandy Lyle, always close to the leaders, emerged from the pack with consecutive birdies at 14 and 15, and held on for a total of 282 to win by the narrowest of margins. Read More
