A windy first day and a fast running course resulted in the world's top players constantly battling against par.
A record attendance for an Open at St George's were enthralled by a leaderboard that included many of the world's top players. Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Thomas Bjorn, Davis Love III and Nick Faldo. Initially, all eyes were on Tiger but he lost his ball with his first shot of the tournament and went on to have 4 putts on the 12th hole during the second round. But it was the unknown to many, Ben Curtis of Ohio, USA, who held his nerve to win with a one under par total of 283.
The final day was full of the usual Open drama, with Denmark's Thomas Bjorn letting the Claret Jug slip through his fingers with a costly five at the par three 16th after taking three to get out of a greenside bunker. Read More
