Volunteer for The Amateur Championship

Royal St George's Golf Club, Sandwich

(strokeplay also at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club)

Saturday 14th June - Saturday 21st June, 2025

The Amateur Championship is one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur championships in the world.

The 2025 Amateur Championship will be held at Royal St George's from 14th to 21st June.

The first Amateur was held at Hoylake in 1885 where 44 players from 12 clubs competed. Since that time, some of golf’s greatest names have triumphed, including Bobby Jones, Sergio Garcia and José María Olazábal.  Contested by 288 players from around the World participating in a stroke play qualifying competition with the qualifiers participating in a match play knockout, the winner secures exemptions into The Open, the US Open, and by tradition, an invitation to play in the Masters.

This year, Royal St George's will host The Amateur for the fifteenth time in its history, the last time coming in 2017 when England's Harry Ellis beat Dylan Perry on the 38th Hole.

Although not on the scale of the Open, its profile and scale have increased significantly in recent years. It attracts a number of spectators for whom the event is a great experience; it is also available to viewers across the World

Such events are impossible to run successfully without the help of Volunteers, therefore we are asking Members to indicate their availability by filling out the form below:

Recording (Saturday 14th June to Tuesday 17th June)
The R&A will provide 3 personnel to oversee recording duties and the club will recruit a small team of volunteers to support the operation. There will be two people on recording at any one time (1 x R&A, 1 x Club Volunteer). Recording support will be required for stroke play qualifying only and will take place within the Championship Pavilion.

Player Registration Desk (Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th June)
Signing players in over the Official Practice Days of the Championship within the
Championship Pavilion.

Crowd Control Walking Marshals (Friday 20th & Saturday 21st June)
In the event of crowds, marshals will be placed at pinch points so as to ensure play remains uninterrupted at a good pace.

Hole 18 Marshals (Monday 16th June & Tuesday 17th June)
This role requires the finish time of each game to be recorded, the hole 18 score on scoring devices, scores for other holes having already been input (see below), collect any caddie bibs escort players to the Recording Office.

Greenside Scorers (Monday 16th June to Wednesday 18th June)
Based every 3 holes at greens 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 & 17 to collect and input scores on scoring devices.

Walking Scorers (Thursday 19th June to Saturday 21st June)
Each match (from the second matchplay round onwards) is accompanied by a walking scorer who will input scores on a hole-by-hole basis.

We would expect volunteers to work shifts of a reasonable duration (at least 3 hours at a time).
